British Designer Antony Price, Famed for Styling David Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer who crafted many legendary styles associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.
His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and performative fashion, such as the soft-colored suits that appeared in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."
Price's death comes shortly after he presented his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "dress" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.
An Enduring Influence
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he started his work in menswear at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.
He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on model Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in crafting sculptural silhouettes made him a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he began working on pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included a number of outfits for her tour of the United States following her marriage.
With a vocation that covered half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
