Information Available About the Victims of the Bondi Shooting

At least 16 lives were killed and over 40 sustained injuries when assailants fired on a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian police are describing as a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, officials have announced the number of fatalities remains at 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were taken to hospital.

The deceased are yet to be officially identified, but investigators think their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the individuals who are known to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Known as a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She told the moments before the shooting, explaining they were standing when the shooting started. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was also killed in the incident, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. Those hurt include two officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
