A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's major public works projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the national leader.
The official announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's economic vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its role in public works. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, defying expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised significant questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party demanded an immediate pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This halt was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."
In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these national projects.
