NY Launches Online Platform for Public to Submit ICE Images After Detentions of 4 US Citizens
New York state attorney general has introduced a recent online portal asking residents to provide visual evidence of immigration raids around New York. This action comes just a shortly after a high-profile ICE raid shook Manhattan's Chinatown, sparking large-scale protests.
American Citizens Held In Enforcement Action
A congressional representative disclosed during a news conference that four citizens were taken into custody and kept for "almost a full day" after the previous day's operation. Demonstrations broke out in NYC on consecutive evenings.
"Every New Yorker has the right to reside free from terror," the AG stated in a statement.
"For those who saw and recorded immigration enforcement during the raid, I urge you to provide that evidence with us. We are committed to assessing these submissions and determining any violations of law."
Form Details
The platform offers options to send images and video footage of the raid, as well as a section to specify where it occurred. Prior to sending, users must tick a checkbox that confirms that "the office may use any materials, images, or footage in a official report, including in a lawsuit or official statement."
Information about the Manhattan Operation
The Manhattan operation, which observers say involved more than 50 government officers, happened in a popular district of the city where imitation products and other goods are commonly traded en masse – typically to visitors.
Recordings of the operation show numerous masked and armed officers restraining and arresting a man, and pushing back bystanders. Crowds of New Yorkers followed the agents down the sidewalks. An armored truck was noticed traveling down the urban roads.
Political Response
In a Wednesday press conference organized with the New York immigrant rights coalition, Representative Goldman, a Democrat, announced that four American citizens were arrested by immigration for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no conditions where nationals should be detained for unjustly." He clarified the persons were let go on the following day with no legal action taken.
"The goal is evident here. It is not about removing offenders," the congressman remarked. "This constitutes a armed campaign to provoke unrest. It is purely a justification to provoke conflict for federal officials to deploy the troops to prevent violence that they initiated."
Extensive Outcry
Anger over the immigration operation rapidly grew – every political contenders criticized the operation, as did the state leader.
"Yet again, the current administration opts for authoritarian theatrics that instill panic, not safety. It must stop," one mayoral candidate wrote.
NYC immigrant rights groups voiced concern too.
"ICE descended on Manhattan's Chinatown with armored transports, masked agents and tactical gear to focus on street vendors trying to make a living. This action had nothing to do with community security and was entirely about frightening communities and communities," remarked the leader of a major immigrant coalition.
Official Guidelines
Agency rules prohibits the arrest of American nationals and the organization has said it will not take into custody American nationals. Nevertheless, investigative journalism has revealed that over 170 US citizens have been taken illegally by federal agents during the period of the existing leadership.
Current Situation
ICE raids have been cropping up increasingly in NY and around the country lately.
A mid-October raid in midtown Manhattan was the first known raid on an refuge facility of the present government. Rallies opposing ICE are widespread along with accusations of force and inhumane treatment.
Recently, a document filed by civil rights groups claimed healthcare failures of expectant mothers in ICE facilities.
