Slot Asserts He Is Secure and Retains Liverpool's Backing After PSV Eindhoven Defeat
Arne Slot acknowledged that it's expected for questions to be raised about his position after another convincing loss against the Dutch champions.
The Reds suffered their ninth defeat in 12 matches, representing the club's worst run since being demoted in the 1953-54 season.
They were taken apart by the Dutch league title holders on a difficult evening at Anfield.
“I am feeling safe, I'm fine, I've received significant backing from management,” Slot commented.
“It would be great to reverse this trend and secure a win obviously but if you are in a managerial role and underperforming then it's expected that questions are asked.”
He continued, “I'm comfortable with my situation. This isn't the first time I've found myself in a difficult position but it's necessary that we improved our results.”
Talks with The Board
Upon being questioned to elaborate on his conversations with the club's leadership, the head coach explained:
“We talk a lot. They are helpful for the squad and to me and we have those conversations but they aren't calling me constantly of the day to say they have faith in me.”
He added, “During our regular discussions I feel the confidence. But I haven’t spoken to them since this defeat yet so we'll see.”
Persistent Failings and Squad Reaction
The manager highlighted familiar failings from his squad in their European loss, specifically poor finishing and defensive lapses.
Meanwhile, midfielder Curtis Jones was more forthright in his assessment of the team's situation.
“I haven't got the solutions. Frankly, I don’t. I'm telling that to everyone,” Jones stated.
“It’s just unacceptable. I don’t even have to wait to reflect. I'm beyond feeling anger internally. I've reached the stage now where I simply lack the words.”
He continued, “It's tough because I’m playing for the club I love. I’m a fan, and I've watched this club for years.”
“In a long, long time, I haven’t experienced a Reds side experiencing a phase like this with performances so bad.”
He finished, “But we still have the emblem on our chest. And until it is taken away, we will always battle.”
“We’re going to try to get this team return to the top, prove again the values of this club and why people call it the top club in the world.”
“But right now, we’re in the shit and it needs to change.”
