The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Track
The Mighty Nein, the newest animated series by Critical Role, unveiled a new introductory sequence. It features the beloved cast of misfits, misfits, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at multiple heart-wrenching personal histories for characters including Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, Fjord.
All in all, the opening appears amazing. However, I felt that something was missing in the song choice.
The intro uses "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional song composed by artist Colm McGuinness. It's a track from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label their music brand. It's a great nostalgic choice, and I believe that devotees of the sequel series will love its inclusion.
But for me, The series' opening fails to capture the hype and energy that accompanied the show's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel added lyrics to the melody for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the song was memorable and fun. At the time, I hadn't even watched the second campaign yet, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my device. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an episode of adventurous fun.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the same chords in my opinion. It's a grand piece of music, but from what I know of this party, I feel that its mood is a little off.
Of course, Critical Role has stated that the series will have a few surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro seems to be one of them.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on the streaming service from November 19. For those eager until then, or wish to prepare to learn about the personas of the second series, the actual play are available on the audio platform and YouTube.
