The people of Israel observe second anniversary of 7 October incident as Palestinian peace negotiations proceed
People have come together across the country to commemorate the second anniversary since the Hamas-conducted offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions advanced in the neighboring country over a resolution to the war in the Gaza Strip.
The assault saw more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as captives. It was the most deadliest day for Jews since the Second World War.
Israel answered by beginning a armed campaign in Gaza which has taken over 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its figures are seen as trustworthy by the UN and other world agencies.
"Our violent opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not broken us," the prime minister added on that day.
He also vowed to "realize all the objectives of the war: the return of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will never again present a threat to Israel".
Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel
The government authorities delayed official remembrance events until 16 October - after the end of the religious holiday season - but events still occurred throughout the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the families of people who died in the Hamas incident was conducted in the coastal city. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was aired throughout Israeli TV networks.
Some time earlier, a silent tribute was respected across the country.
Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt
At the same time, Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams met in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of third-party negotiations to review the terms of the proposal.
A prominent representative involved in the negotiations said that an late session of negotiations started at evening in Egypt.
The official explained the day's discussions finished without significant progress, due to differences over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not resume fighting after the first phase of the agreement.
He added that the discussions are "challenging and have yet to produce any significant progress," but mentioned that facilitators are working hard to close the gaps between the conflicting groups.
Essential Points in Discussions
- A lasting halt to fighting
- The swap of the captives still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
- Measures for relief supplies provision
- After-conflict management of the territory
Public Reaction
In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square earlier, young Hagar - whose sibling lived through the attack on the outdoor event, where 378 people were murdered and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - told: "Nowhere appears as home anymore and until every captive are released no one will be secure."
"Once we see all home once more, we can feel relief anew. Then we can commence recover," she added.
In front of the leader's official dwelling in the capital, people gathered to express their solidarity for the loved ones of the captives. Israel says nearly fifty continue in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be alive.
Activist one woman stated: "It's necessary do every compromise needed for the captives to return. But we really want promises that we will be protected."
Research now frequently demonstrate that around 70% of Israeli citizens want the war to conclude in exchange for the freedom of the captives.
Palestinian Circumstances
At the site of the music event, mourners assembled to pay their respects.
From the site, the boom of Israeli air strikes and explosions could be detected just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people reported the intense Israeli bombardment persisted.
In the main city, air and artillery strikes were documented in the early hours of Tuesday in the western neighborhood, area and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the east side area of that sector, as well the camp to the north-west.
"As the dusk arrives, the anxiety arrives with it," relocated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose teenage son was died by an Israeli air strike earlier, shared.
"Me and my three children are afraid of the air strikes. During nighttime we are sleeping together, holding each other, especially my little child who puts his face on me all night."
"Continuously we look at the reports to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be completed and that the war will resume to us."

The medical facility in the urban area said it had taken in the bodies of several people by the daytime, including a trio who died in an Israeli attack in the southern area.
