UN:Me: An Cerebral Horror That Blends Silent Hill and Social Deduction Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed several intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive experience where a girl containing multiple human souls within her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the mind," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Within her exist four distinct souls, all possessing unique anxieties and motivations. These souls can seize control at will, unleashing their innermost terrors upon her suddenly.
Judging by revealed footage, much of the action takes place within a creepy medical facility, though additional clips show the protagonist navigating a desolate chapel.
An Environment of Personal Dread
"What are you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. People in power. Things that appear minor to other people can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that idea — fears that are specific to every individual."
The central mechanic involves controlling whichever soul emerges at a particular moment. However, these identities will switch against your will during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's fears become exaggerated and assault the protagonist in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision
Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by orderlies all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the waiting room have enormous flowers where their heads should be. Floral motifs are an ever-present element, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the heroine is the "real" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the body belongs to them," notes a creator. "During the game, you must determine who is real."
Once players believes a soul is fake, they must eliminate it. But, because each soul can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice states. "The last one remaining might be a fraud. Either way, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is available to wishlist on platforms.
