The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from the affordable apartment that became a focal point throughout his run for office.

A Historic Residence

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors since the mid-20th century.

But, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a central platform, did not confirm he would live there immediately after his victory in November.

"My choice came down to keeping my family safe and the importance of focusing all of my focus on enacting the platform on affordability voters voted for," stated Mamdani on Monday.

Thanking a Neighborhood

Mamdani lived in the Queens borough of Astoria, an area known for its abundance of immigrant populations and culinary diversity.

"To the people of Astoria: many thanks for showing us the best of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"While I may no longer live there, the community will forever remain a part of me and the work I do," he said.

Campaign Controversy

In his campaign, Mamdani linked his core platform – halting rent increases – to his own housing situation.

However his opponents, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he hails from a well-known family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Not all mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, chose to live in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side during his tenure, which concluded in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg felt it ought to be a place for public city functions, and advocated for an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.

A Stately Residence

As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings very different than his humble Astoria apartment.

With its cream-colored walls, emerald shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure with views of the East River.

Inside, the ground floor of the classically designed mansion is decorated to reflect the home's original era.

The property, which reportedly has several bedrooms, also boasts enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

Past occupants have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of former mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors occasionally opened and shutting on their own, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "No matter what anyone says," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

His former home is rent-stabilized, meaning the city imposes caps on how much property owners can hike the monthly cost each year.

City residents view rent-stabilized housing as crucial resources as the cost of housing exceeds what many can afford.

It was reported Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the property website Zillow, the median rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
